Sample Medical School Admission Essay
Becoming a medical doctor has been my driving passion and dream throughout my entire life. I developed medical interest long time ago when I was very young. Although I never knew what medical studies, I believed that training as a doctor would give me the greatest professional satisfaction. At this tender age, it is obvious that I never understood how this knowledge and required expertise would be obtained until I was in secondary school. After considering several medical training colleges and universities in the United States, I settled at Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine as my favorite institution. This selection is attributed to a number of reasons which surround the history, performance and organizational structures.
Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine is the oldest and largest institution among all medical schools at Meharry. It has the ability to admit ninety medical students every year together with thirty residents. These residents gain training in courses like Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Occupational Medicine and Family practice. Additionally, the school offers opportunities to its students in terms of furthering their studies to higher levels. It trains medical students for Masters Degree course in Public Health, which makes its graduates more competitive and well placed in terms of job market. It is worth noting that the school further offers Ph.D. Programs in Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Microbiology which are among highly ranked research branches (Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine).
Apart from Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine being known to offer higher levels of studies to its students, it also has a national image. The institution is recognized throughout the country for its academic programs and community based structures (Saralyn et al 40). There are several national centers which have been initiated to address issues which include but not limited to HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anemia, environmental health and aging. The entire School’s staff and students actively serve the community through a wider array of ways like giving informative health talks, mentorship programs especially for college and high school students. The school further has a special program which is aimed at preparing college graduates to prepare pursuing medical courses in various professional schools (PCPR).
Another reason for choosing Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine is because the national representation reflected in its students’ body. Students from every group including Native American Communities, Caucasian, Asians, Hispanic and African Americans signify the diversity of the nation. It is also my desire to serve minority communities which is part of the institution’s culture (Association of American Medical Colleges 267). Most of its undergraduates work in underserved urban and rural regions as it was the initial commitment of its pioneers. The institution confers more than ten percent of all Ph.D. degrees which are awarded to African Americans in biomedical sciences across the country. The school enjoys a significant role in promoting diversity within the national workforce of health professionals. Above all, the institution has produced prominent personalities in the United States and beyond borders. They include but not limited to Dr. Kamuzu Banda who is the current president of Malawi, Dr. Edward Cooper, head of American Heart Association and Dr. Willie Adams, who is the mayor of Albany in Georgia (Braintalk). All these factors have compelled me to apply for admission at Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine.
